Where the fun begins!

Established in 1960 by Peggy Dexter, known throughout the North East for her expertise as a highly respected dance teacher, Dexter School of Dancing is now one of the premier dance schools in the area.  Continuing this legacy, her son, Tom Dexter, is now at the helm running a wide range of dance classes and training many dance teachers to his exacting standards.  As President of the NCDTA, Tom in now more involved than ever in the promotion a development of dancing across the north-east.

Our mission is to deliver dance classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels in a range of different styles including ballroom, latin, old-time, line-dance and formation at various venues across the region.  Private lessons are available to suit your individual needs.

Formerly located at Dexter’s Grosvenor Dance Centre in Chillingham Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tom has now diversified into other venues across the north east area, places such as St Francis Scout Hall and Innesfree Social Club in an attempt to make dancing available to a wider audience.

Why dance?

Dancing, in its many forms, has long been known as a form of expression. Nowadays, it is seen not only as an art form but also as a means of improving physical fitness, mental wellness and cognitive abilities, a method of relaxation and a means of making friends and forming new bonds.

Dancing is not just for today’s ‘Strictly Stars’ it is for everyone, young and old (and everything inbetween).  We might not be able to get you on the next series of Strictly but anyone can learn to dance with the right tuition.  Whether you want to dance competitively, gain your junior/senior medals, learn the latest Modern Sequence Dances, master a wedding dance or simply enjoy the friendly atmosphere of a modern dance class, we’re here to teach you.

Why not call in to one of our sessions or drop up a line using the ‘Contact Us’ page, you’ve got nothing to loose and everything to gain, remember...dancing is where the fun begins!

Hi, I’m Jan. I started dancing when I was 4 years old. After completing all of my medal tests, I went on to be a successful competitor for several years. In 2005, I joined Dexter School of Dancing and have remained there since. I now dance with Tom, support the Adult Ballroom and Latin classes and also help to run the Social and Modern Sequence Dances.

I started dancing when I was 7 and completed medal tests in Ballroom and Old Time up to Gold Bar Standard. I fondly remember dancing at the Empress Ballroom in Whitley Bay and at the Memorial Hall in Wallsend as well as competing in annual competitions at Butlins, Filey. More recently, I started dancing with my husband, a raw beginner, doing lessons in Ballroom, Latin and Sequence with Tom at Dexter’s School of Dancing. In 2015 we passed our Associate Ballroom Exam and became members of the NCDTA.
